Biography - Pascale Obolo
Me the African, born in Cameroon, I discovered Trinidad through its’ Carnival.
This Caribbean island reminded me deeply of Africa.
I felt at home. The Carnival reminded me of certain rituals back home. This feeling of having roots and a common family. I was attracted by the cultural and historical heritage of this island that was calling me. During my numerous trips to Trinidad, I felt integrated, the people were taking me for a Trinidadian. And they were very surprised when I exposed my true identity, they watched me with tenderness and a certain pride.
During my last trip to Trinidad in August 2002, a curious event took place. Just before flying off for Paris, as I was watching with nostalgia for the last time Maracas Bay, an old fisherman came up to me and started talking. He talked about the beauty of this bay whilst singing old Calypso songs, the lyrics of which were celebrating the beauty of the island, whilst keeping the timing on the bow of his old boat, the same way the griots of my village would tell me the story of my ancestors to the beat of the tam tams… In this moment, I realized I would come back to Trinidad to do a film on Calypso music. It was my turn, like the griots, to tell the story of the old Calypsonians, to contribute to the transmission of this music that is a vessel of the Caribbean heritage.
